Cozy. Comfy. Classy.

The Michael Kors Fall 2020 Collection at this year’s New York Fashion Week was a cozy display of oversized sweaters and shawls, fitted coats and various patterns. Neutral colors paved the way for splashes of vibrancy, allowing sunshine yellows and ravishing reds to really pop!

Simple checkered and striped patterns were accompanied by a blotched, chaotic take on cow print, resembling splattered paint from an artist’s brush.

With these looks, the lack of pattern enables the bold colors to truly capture attention. These pieces embody a satisfying mix of simple and striking.

The perfectly tailored fit of the red coat on the left serves as the perfect complement for the flowy red dress.

The oversized fit of the yellow coat on the right appears just as chic and polished as the red ensemble. The edges are perfectly cut and tailored, giving it the same polished look.

Contrasting the yellow and red looks, gray is a staple in this collection. These looks utilize subtle pattern to add some pizzazz to the depressed aura of gray.

The left image shows a fitted, beautifully tailored and layered coat. These layers – along with the dotted design – help define this look as simple instead of plain.

The coat in the right image is not perfectly fitted and is still wonderfully tailored. The oversized sleeves are full and flowy, giving this coat a dress vibe. The sequined gray gown that peaks out from under the long coat gives this look a fun flare.

Both of these looks contain scarf-like skirts. The checkered skirt on the right clashes a bit with the large checkered pattern on the shawl.

On the left, the gray shirt and skirt allow the bold print of the jacket to really stand out. The cow print-esque design works wonderfully with the fitted jacket, as it is a perfect combination of polished and chaotic.

These ensembles both employ stylish sweaters, but do so in a different way

The look on the right contains an oversized gray knit sweater that emits a comfortable and cozy vibe.

The sweater in the left image is more fitted, swapping cozy for chic.

The furry white vest on the left and the shimmering silver gown on the right bring some bang to these looks.

The 2020 Oscars

The themes and trends of the not-so-budget-friendly Oscars 2020 (with a twist)

The 2020 Oscars were full of various, unique trends. As you may assume, most of these looks solely lean toward the affordability of the mega-rich (you won’t catch me in Regina King’s gorgeous Versace gown, unfortunately).

However, there are still ways to wear an Oscars-inspired look on a budget (for select styles). And despite the fact that the average total price of an A-list actress’ Academy Awards attire is $10 million (according to Insider), there were still stars who included budget-friendly items in their glamorous outfits.

Rebel Wilson and Sigourney Weaver stunned in looks inspired by Old Hollywood. Their hair is parted to one side, followed by loose, flowing waves. Weaver wowed in her emerald Dior gown while Wilson stole the show in a glitzy custom Jason Wu gown and vintage Pomellato jewelry.

When asked about the cost of her look on the red carpet, Wilson responded, “You can’t even put a price on it.” In this case, I guess I’ll just have to stick with my own vintage floral-print summer dresses (and by vintage I mean Forever 21).

Salma Hayek, Regina King, and Cynthia Erivo all looked gorgeous in their one-strap gowns. While King and Erivo’s looks are completely sleeveless despite a single strap, Hayek’s gown includes a flowy, sheer sleeve on her left arm. However, this sleeve is completely different from the thin, silver strap on her right arm.

Hayek wore Gucci, King wore Versace, and Erivo wore Atelier Versace.

While her dress and Harry Winston jewelry were certainly not cheap (her jewelry cost half a million dollars, as reported by MSN), King did include a budget-friendly element to her look.

According to Allure, King’s makeup artist Latrice Johnson revealed that $6 Ardell Double Wispies are to thank for King’s flawless lashes (I happen to have those same lashes in my makeup bag, so that’s a win).

While the one-strap look was a huge trend of the night, the skinny strap also had its moments.

Florence Pugh rocked this style in custom Louis Vuitton, Laura Dern in Armani Privé, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Vera Wang.

While I’m sure the cost of these gowns and jewels could definitely break one’s bank account, I have worn a similar look for $65 total.

For a party this past January, I wore a $40 skinny-strap dress from Windsor, paired with a $15 necklace and earring set. I also wore a bracelet (I don’t know the price of this because it was a gift, however I’m assuming it was a tad cheaper than Regina King’s jewels).

Kaitlyn Dever, Joaquin Phoenix, and Timothée Chalamet sported eco-friendly looks.

Dever stunned in a red Louis Vuitton gown, which she described as “completely sustainable.” As reported by E News, the design house called this dress an “ethical and eco-responsible custom-made gown in silk satin, embroidered with Swarovski crystals and glass beads.”

Phoenix wore a black Stella McCartney tuxedo with grosgrain shawl lapel. He has worn this same look throughout most of this awards season, according to The Los Angeles Times.

While the tuxedo itself might not be budget-friendly, recycling outfits is a good practice to keep your wallet happy.

Chalamet garnered attention in his Prada look, which was made from Prada’s regenerated nylon, Econyl, according to The Los Angeles Times.

While the Oscars is a place for glitz and glam, it is also an outlet for stars to share important messages. Spike Lee and Natalie Portman wore looks that carried deep meanings.

Lee’s look was a tribute to the late Kobe Bryant. The purple Gucci suit contained Bryant’s basketball jersey number, “24.”

Lee also wore Nike Kobe 9 Elite Strategy sneakers.

Portman wore a Giorgio Armani gown. Her Dior cape contained the last names of the female directors who were (rudely) left out of the Awards.

Bossin’ on a Budget – What This Means and How To Do It

Featured image obtained from Fashion Nova

“I love shopping on a budget. I believe that more fashion mistakes are made by people with deep pockets than by those who shop on a budget.”

Tim Gunn, obtained from picturequotes,com

Shopping on a budget can be a hard task. Fashion can be expensive – and cheap clothing is too often associated with cheap quality. However, style does not equal expensive. You don’t need to drop thousands – or even hundreds – on an outfit in order to be stylish. And while inexpensive clothing can lead to poor quality, this is certainly not always the case. It is possible to dress fashionably without breaking your bank account. You just have to know where to look.

I believe that style is a personal expression. Fashion is a unique avenue of excitement and opportunity. People should not have to be wealthy in order to be heard in the fashion world. Anyone can acquire excellent style within a range of prices. The media, particularly surrounding celebrities, has made many people feel otherwise. Celebrities are often photographed wearing thousands of dollars of clothing, whether walking down the street or attending a glitzy award show. The glamorous nature of award shows appeals to fashion lovers. However, the styles displayed at these exhibits are not realistic, meaning that they do not in any way speak to everyday fashion. Most celebrities borrow their looks from designers rather than purchasing the outfits themselves. And in regards to celebrities walking down the block sporting thousands of dollars worth of clothes – well, that’s just because they have enough money in their bank accounts to pay off my student loans, as well as the loans of my fellow 67,000 classmates at Rutgers University.

Fashion is fun, and breaking your bank account certainly is not. I have three main objectives when navigating the fashion world and explaining what I know to others. My first goal is to compare celebrity clothes to similar outfits with a much smaller price tag. My second goal is to provide helpful tips on acquiring cheap clothing while leaving the cheap quality behind. My third main objective is to show that even celebrities don’t always wear super expensive, unattainable clothing. Overall, my hope is to cultivate a stronger sense of fashion confidence in the average person – even if this means I help just one person feel better about style and affordability.

Yours Truly, Mary Connelly (Broke college student and lover of fashion).
